PASIGHAT, Jan 4: Amid heightened security and vigilance in the Daying Ering Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary here in East Siang District, five habitual hunters were arrested from Sanyasi Tukura under Anchalghat Range early this morning.
A team led by Beat Officer, Orin Perme arrested Dibash Pait, 30, Diganta Doley, 25, Batsa Doley, 28, Rajesh Sungkurang, 42 and Nong Doley following inputs of hunters entering the sanctuary.
According to Perme, two of hunters Dibash Pait and Nong Doley are dreaded hunters who were also warned many times not to hunt inside the sanctuary. Along with a hunted Hog Deer, 3 numbers of 12 Bore Guns, 14 live cartridges and 3 mobile handsets were seized from the hunters.
“After getting inputs of hunters entering the sanctuary, we followed them and waited in ambush. They surrendered when we asked them to”, added Perme, a dedicated staffer who has been awarded the Silver Medal by State Government in 2018.
Divisional Forest Officer, Tasang Taga who also rushed to the spot said that the offenders will be booked as per relevant laws of Wildlife Act and reiterated serious action against all violators. The arrested hunters were later handed over to Sille-Oyan Police Station this evening after recording their statements. Meanwhile, Perme has appealed the police and magistrate to cancel the three gun licenses.
The officials further appealed likeminded people of the district including neighbouring districts to refrain from giving their guns to hunters for hunting inside the sanctuary. ‘Such negligence from gun owners will also equally invite same offence for encouraging hunting in the protected area,’ added Taga.
