ZIRO, Mar 13: Saint Claret College, Ziro (SCCZ) today organised a sensitization programme on ‘Mental Health and Addiction’ in collaboration with the Department of Psychiatric Social Work (DPSW), Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi Regional Institute of Mental Health (LGBRIMH), Tezpur and Lower Subansiri District Police.
Around 80 participants comprising police personnel, teachers and NGOs attended the programme. HoD, DPSW Dr. Sonia Pereira Deuri and Associate Professor from the same department in LGBRIMH Dr. Sobhana H in coordination with their team of six Resource Persons conducted the technical sessions from Tezpur through videoconferencing. 
DySP, Lower Subansiri Tasi Darang highlighted the topic’s relevance in the context of the recent arrest of drug peddlers in Ziro. District Narcotics Officer Takhe Riniyo while elaborating on the legal implications of drug addiction and peddling sought cooperation from the youths and NGOs to combat the menace. The other Resource Persons dealt with the issues relating to mental health and its causes, addiction and related symptoms, role of family members etc. The speakers highlighted how substance abuse can lead to poor mental health and depression and negatively impact the growth of young adults, leading even to suicidal tendencies.
The speakers also shared the data that most of the studies carried out in the Northeast suggest that elderly people suffer from hypertension due to substance abuse.
