KHONSA, Jan 28: Taking part in the ongoing National   Road Safety Month, Department of Transport in collaboration with Tirap District Administration and District Police today conducted a road safety awareness programme here at the taxi stand near Khonsa market.
The programme started with a pledge on road safety administered by SP Kardak Riba followed by flagging off of a bike rally of lady police personnel. 
Launching the campaign the SP said its aim is to spread mass awareness on all road safety protocols. Urging the district’s youths, students, drivers and common people to abide by the new traffic rules under Motor Vehicles Act 2019, he detailed the fines and penalties which have been increased substantially under the amended Act. 
While giving the details of road accidents and related deaths which occurred in 2019, the SP further informed that there were 34 on-spot injuries and 6 deaths later at hospitals in Tirap during 2018, 2019 and 2020.
Medical Officer, GH Khonsa Dr. Sompha Sumpa while enumerating the ill effects of alcohol, narcotic drugs and other psychotropic substances during driving, added that as per National Health Survey Arunachal Pradesh  is one of the most alcohol consuming state in India and as such driving under intoxication increases the chances of road accidents. 
Resource Person-cum-DTO Aman Wangsaham highlighted the importance of National   Road Safety Month and urged parents not to allow under-aged children  to drive vehicles, especially two wheelers, adding that its violation will attract a fine of Rs. 25,000. Pamphlets containing road safety tips were also distributed on the occasion.
