RONO HILLS, Aug 17: Rajiv Gandhi University’s Department of Physical Education is conducting a 5-day Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on the theme- ‘Health Interventions for Fit and Prosperous India’ which was inaugurated on Monday by the Union MoS (I/c) Youth Affairs & Sports and Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju through the Zoom platform.
The FDP which will continue till August 21 has seen a registration of 221 participants. RGU VC Professor Saket Kushwaha, Pro VC Professor Amitava Mitra, Registrar Professor Tomo Riba, Dean & In-charge LNIPE, Gwalior, North Eastern Regional Centre Guwahati Professor Biswajit Basumatary, Resource Persons from across the nation and Deans of faculties attended the inaugural programme through virtual mode.
Rijiju while congratulating the university team and Resource Persons for promoting the Fit India movement through the FDP, also thanked the entire university fraternity for securing 2nd rank among 40 central universities in the country. Terming the achievement “remarkable” since RGU is located in the interior part of the country and has limited resources, the Union MoS shared his memory of association with the varsity and drew reference to Manchester University’s improved academic ranking through promotion of in-campus sports culture. While deliberating on the FDP’s theme, he explained how negatively skewed health indicators are a reflection of poor health of citizens and underscored it is only through fitness they can reach economic prosperity, psycho-physiological and socio-emotional wellbeing. Deliberating on the “Fit India” campaign launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he also appreciated the Union HRD Ministry for treating Physical Education and Sports as one of the core subjects in the New Education Policy-2019. Discussing about the National Centre for Sports Sciences and Research, a flagship initiative of the MY&S and regretting India’s poor medal tally despite the hard work by sports persons, the Union MoS informed that the Ministry is working to develop a scientific support mechanism and the Centre of Excellence RGU and Manipur Sports University will play a pivotal role in the process. He appreciated the efforts taken by RGU for organizing the FDP to promote the Fit India campaign and divulged that the Union Sports Ministry is going to launch a manual book of fitness assessment to provide technical support.
Professor Kushwaha, also the Chief Patron of the FDP said the university will be indebted to the Union MoS for his support and asserted the department will be a mark of excellence in the entire Northeast. Professor Riba thanked the Union MoS and his Ministry for launching the “Fit India” campaign. In Technical Session-I, Professor Basumatary delivered his keynote address on “Relevance of Physical education & Sports in New Education Policy.”
Technical Session-II saw Professor B.C. Kapri explaining the usefulness of yoga in attaining fitness by all categories of people. HoD, Physical Education Dr. Anil Mili also spoke on the occasion. RGU PR
