ITANAGAR, Jul 5: The Rajiv Gandhi University Students’ Union (RGUSU) has opposed the decision of the varsity authority to conduct the terminal examinations scheduled for August 17-29 next.
Addressing the media persons here at the Press Club on Sunday, RGUSU President Dopum Sonam called the move by the university authority as “dictatorship decision.” Reiterating its demand for promoting all the students in terminal semesters in line with that of the intermediate courses, Sonam rued that the RGU authority has been too adamant by deciding to conduct the terminal examinations. “We value our health and give importance to life,” he stated.
Pointing out to the current Capital region situation which has seen a huge surge of Covid cases forcing the government to go for a full 7-day lockdown, the RGUSU President lamented that instead of treading the path of caution, the varsity authority has decided to conduct the exams amid the escalating pandemic. While insisting that courses need to be completed first before examinations, he claimed that none of the courses have been completed, including the intermediate semesters.
“We had just started our course for the final semester when the lockdown came into force in March. Now you cannot force us to take the exams and the 2-3 months academic loss must be compensated,” Sonam asserted. He also insisted on conducting the supplementary exam for the 5th semester undergraduate courses and the 3rd semester exam for postgraduate courses, stating that these were not conducted. “Even though the guidelines are as per the UGC-decided framework, it can be altered by the affiliated universities according to the prevalent situation,” he underscored. “You will not be able to guarantee that the disease will not spread if the students come from various places, mostly from red zones,” he stated.
Questioning on the effectiveness of the online classes, he said that in context of the current situation, students are not in a position to take the exams. “Even if you decide to go ahead with the schedule, you will have to assure us that no harm will be caused to us,” the RGUSU President demanded.
Drawing VC’s attention, he also demanded that a special academic council meeting be convened to arrive at a concrete decision on the issue.
