RONO HILLS, Aug 16: The fisheries and aquatic ecology research team of Rajiv Gandhi University has recently discovered five more species of fish in Arunachal Pradesh which are altogether new additions to the World Fish Database.
These new discoveries of fish species have also been published and elaborated in different journals of international repute. They are-Mystus prabini sp. nov. discovered in Sinkin and Dibang river of Lower Dibang Valley district (Zootaxa, 4648, 3: 511–522);Exostoma kottelati sp. nov. discovered in Ranga river of Lower Subansiri district (Zootaxa, 4585, 2: 369–377); Creteuchiloglanis tawangensis, in Tawangchu river of Tawang district (Aqua, 25,1: 17-24); Garra ranganensis sp. nov. in Ranga river of Lower Subansiri district (Species: 20: 59-71) and Physoschistura harkishorei, sp. nov. in Dibang and Lohit rivers of Lower Dibang Valley district (Zootaxa, 4337, 3: 403–412). In the context of this achievement, RGU Research Unit Team Leader Professor DN Das said that due to dense rain forest, steep terrain and communication problem, majority of the remote water bodies of the state are still not easily accessible to researchers. But his research team is very optimistic that meticulous exploration work may result in more discoveries of new ichthyo species from this part of India in future, added Professor Das. RGU PR
