Rono Hills, Sep 1: Expressing profound grief over the demise of Bharat Ratna Pranab Mukherjee, the former President of the country, Rajiv Gandhi University on Tuesday conducted a condolence meeting here as a mark of respect to the departed soul.
RGU Jt. Registrar Dr. David Pertin read out a brief biography of Late. Mukherjee and VC Professor Saket Kushwaha recalled his ideologies and principles. Pro VC Professor Amitava Mitra also spoke on the solemn occasion. A two-minute silence was observed after formally requested by Registrar, Professor Tomo Riba.
It is pertinent to recall that the former President of India, who besides being a seasoned politician was also an academician par excellence presided over the XIII Convocation of RGU on November 30, 2013 wherein he shared his views on education, research and the traditional knowledge system. While stressing on having top quality teachers and use of technology in education, the former President in his speech exhorted the RGU fraternity to prioritize research. “There is scope for conducting innovative research in North East India, a region rich in natural resources and biodiversity. Over-exploitation of natural resources causes environmental degradation and leads to long run unsustainability. The onus is on you to work out alternative growth models which are sustainable and you must pursue inter-disciplinary research on natural resource management to attend the challenges faced by the hill economy, taking into account the conflict between traditional and modern institutions…” were his exact words.
