RONO HILLS, Jun 20: The Institute of Distance Education and Women’s Studies & Research Centre of Rajiv Gandhi University in collaboration with the UGC organized a one-day webinar titled ‘Gender Dialogues: Stereotyping & Bias, Equality and Women’s Rights in the Digital Age’ here on June 19 last.
More than five hundred participants from across the country applied for registration, out of which 250 were allowed to participate in the webinar. The Centre’s Director Professor Elizabeth Hangsing and RGU Registrar In-charge Professor Tomo Riba stressed on the importance of abolishing gender disparity. The varsity’s VC Professor Saket Kushwaha said that it has always been the endeavour of RGU to promote gender equality in its workspace. Director IDE, RGU Professor Ashan Riddi gave a general overview of the webinar. One of the leading social activists on women's rights in Arunachal Pradesh, Jarjum Ete initiated the technical session and spoke on the intricate ways through which gender discrimination works, particularly in context of tribal societies and raised the issue of women’s reservation in Parliament which has been pending since 1996.
Activist and lawyer Dr. Alana Golmei spoke on the legal aspects of women’s rights guaranteed by the judiciary and the Indian Constitution. Fulbright Scholar at the Department of Global Health Initiatives, University of Maryland, author and Professor at the Banaras Hindu University Madhu Khuswaha stressed on the need to make a collective effort to dispel the stereotypes about women prevalent in society.
Pro VC Professor Amitava Mitra spoke on the demography of the Parliament and highlighted how population representation in terms of male-female ratio is not reflected in either of the houses.  Professor Jumyir Basar from the Arunachal Institute of Tribal Studies, Joint Registrar, Academics and Counselling Dr. David Pertin and Assistant Professor, IDE Chathiam Lowang also spoke on the occasion.

Assistant Professor, IDE Moyir Riba was the Coordinator of the webinar and Professor Jumyir Basar played the role of moderator of the sessions.
