Rono Hills, Jul 4: The National Service Scheme (NSS) Cell of Rajiv Gandhi University on Saturday organized a daylong online workshop on ‘Swachhta and Jalshakti’ for the varsity’s NSS volunteers.
Arranged in collaboration with the Mahatma Gandhi National Council of Rural Education, Department of Education, Union Ministry of HRD, the aim of the programme was to introduce the aspects of Swachhta and Jalshakti in the varsity campus and enable the volunteers to work with both rural and urban people to evolve appropriate solutions for sustainable sanitation and water management. The inaugural programme was graced by RGU Vice Chancellor Professor Saket Kushwaha and Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Amitava Mitra. NSS volunteers from all the four units of the RGU NSS Cell participated in the workshop.
NSS Programme Coordinator Dr. Anil Mili while mentioning the objective of the workshop recalled Mahatma Gandhi’s crusade for sanitation. Pro-VC spoke on the sustainable development goals and highlighted three key points namely clean and green environment, energy conservation and water conservation. VC Professor Kushwaha stressed on creation of teams and Standard Operating Procedures for fixing responsibility on stakeholders including the NSS volunteers for waste management and water conservation efforts in the campus. The VC also discussed on collaboration and engagement with communities and government for reducing carbon footprints for a clean and green environment. During the first technical session, Head I/c of RGU’s Department of Social Work, Dr. Kaushalendra Pratap Singh emphasized on implementing the Swachh Campus initiative through a systematic approach by including various stakeholders especially NSS volunteers. Resource Person John Gaingamlung Gangmei discussed the formation of Swachhta and Jalshakti groups namely Greenery Group, Water management Group, Energy Conservation Group, Liquid & Solid Waste Management Group and Sanitation & Hygiene Group. The other Resource Person, Assistant Professor, Department of Social Work Dr. Ravi Ranjan Kumar while elaborating on the approaching water scarcity in the country recalled NITI Aayog’s Composite Water Management Index (CWMI) Report 2018 which has warned that 21 major Indian cities are racing to reach zero groundwater level by 2020.
NSS PO Bhaskar Jyoti Chutia informed that the varsity’s NSS Cell will form groups and conduct online sessions on various issues in coming days. RGU PR
