Rono Hills, May 26: The Himalayan Clean Up (THC) campaign 2019 was conducted today by the RGU NSS Cell in collaboration with Integrated Mountain Initiative (IMI) /Sustainable Development Forum Arunachal (SDFA) here in the university campus.
The campaign is in line with the clean-up programme conducted across the Himalayan states of the country and is an annual event performed every year on May 26 in conjunction with ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ theme of World Environment Day. The main objective of the mass clean-up is to focus attention on the problem of waste in the mountains, specifically single use plastic waste.
During the programme, volunteers collected wastes from different locations in the campus and conducted Waste Audit after proper segregation and data tabulation. RGU Vice Chancellor Professor Saket Kushwaha, who is one of the Swachhta Prerak of the state stated that the university will be completing Green Audit of its campus within a year. He also shared that waste management in RGU shall be taken up innovatively with focus on minimizing use of plastics and drinking water facilities is also being set up in the university in order to minimize the use of disposable mineral water bottles.
VC also shared the vision of having a dedicated Mountain Enrichment Club wherein various activities would be taken up in the adjoining areas of the university involving nearby communities and students to seek solutions for the maintenance of hill ecosystem. RGU Press Release
