ITANAGAR, Aug 8: The Pasighat forest division led by Divisional Forest Officer (Territorial) Tashi Mize on Thursday distributed relief materials to the flood affected victims of Mer Village in East Siang district.
Relief materials which included edible items and livestock medicines were sponsored by the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) under its rapid action project (RAP).
Mer, which is located at the outskirts of Daying Ering Wildlife Sanctuary, is around 39 km from Pasighat, the district headquarters of East Siang. It is surrounded by Dotung River in the east, Taro Tamak in the west and by the Mighty Siang in the south due to which the hamlet suffers from heavy floods every year during the monsoon and remains cut off from the rest district.
The village has around 148 households with a population of over 1200.
Addressing the locals after handing over the relief items, DFO Mize said that besides helping the villagers in the time of need, the distribution programme was also an initiative of the WTF and Pasighat forest division to spread awareness on wildlife and forest protection.
Mize said that deforestation is one of the main contributors which cause small-scale natural disasters like floods and landslides.
“People should preserve and conserve the forest resources in order to avoid large scale devastation in the future. Deforestation and unabated destruction of flora and fauna invite natural calamities in one way or the other, so we need your support in maintaining biodiversity and ecological balance which is essential for all living organisms,” Mize said.
The Head Gaon Bura and locals of the village, while expressing their thankfulness to the WTI and Pasighat forest division for their support, further expressed their willingness to donate a piece of land for the establishment of a community conserved area (CCA) in the village.
The villagers also resolved to manage and protect the elephant corridor for the movement of mammoths from Daying Ering Wildlife Sanctuary to Dibru-Saikhowa National Park in Assam and vice versa.
Among others Range Forest Officers O Tayeng and J Geyi RFO and forest officials from the Mebo forest range were also present on the occasion. Newsdesk
