TEZU, Sep 11: With the objective of addressing the low productivity issue of orchards and plantations in Lohit district, a rejuvenation programme was launched here recently.
The district has many orange orchards in the Circles of Wakro, Tezu and Sunpura, but they are too old and unproductive. The rejuvenation programme sanctioned by the Department of Horticulture under the centrally sponsored scheme viz. Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH) for 2019-20 will cover 200 units (200 hectares) of old orchards for boosting orange production and bringing change in the economic condition of farmers.
“Rejuvenation is a reversal of the ageing process and is in contrast with the ‘life extension’ strategies that attempt to combat the causes of ageing in order to slow it down. Under it, focus is given on repairing the damage caused by ageing through replacement of damaged tissues with new ones,” HDO S Rehman explained.
According to the Horticulture Department, Wakro which was once known as the ‘Orange bowl of Arunachal’ has lost its reputation and the programme aims to revive the lost glory. 16 Women Self Help Groups (SHGs) covering 135 individual women farmers and 5 individual farmers under Tezu Circle covering a total of 140 units have been benefited.
Local MLA Karikho Kri had distributed planting materials and farming tools to the beneficiaries in July in presence of officials and staff.
