PASIGHAT, Nov 11: State Legislative Assembly Speaker, Pasang D Sona today inaugurated the three-day Regional Agri Fair 2019-20 themed “Ecosystem Approach for Sustainable Agriculture” here at the College of Horticulture & Forestry.
Emphasizing on the significance of agriculture for sustainable economy, the Speaker said that Arunachal Pradesh being an agro-based state must learn to use modern technology in farming and hoped that the mega agri-fair will facilitate desired information sharing among farmers about latest technical know-how in agriculture and allied sectors. He called upon the framers of the state to avail the opportunity to learn something new from experts and apply them in practice for sustainable agricultural development. Stating that CAU, Imphal has a very important role to play in scientific agriculture and providing the technical know-how especially regarding organic agriculture and market linkages, he appealed the university to focus on temperate agriculture as Arunachal has a vast area under temperate zone.Kanubari MLA, Gabriel D Wangsu said that as farmers face lots of practical problems and stakeholders from scientists to extension services must come forward to guide and handhold them for overcoming critical gaps for good yield and enhancing production. As the focus of the Agri fair are farmers, the MLA urged the farmers/growers to avail the best of know-how from experts and scientists. All stakeholders must strive to achieve the goal to make Arunachal one of the leading producers in the agri and allied sectors and make farming a profitable venture, he added.
Vice-Chancellor, CAU, ImphalProfessor M Premjit Singh said that in order to double farmers income by 2022, introduction of rainwater harvesting(Jalkun), participatory quality seed production, primary processing unit in villages, cattle based farming, farm mechanization, etc will play a significant role. ADC(Hq), Taddo Borangsaid that NE can compete with other regions by focusing on their strengths like cultivation of turmeric, king chilli, birds eye chilli, kiwifruit, pineapple, tea, large cardamom, aromatic rice, indigenous fish culture like Pengba (Osteobrama belangeri) of Manipur,etc.

Litchi saplings were also distributed to selected farmers from Northeast region.
Altogether there are 50 stalls in the fair with participation of over 450 farmers fromArunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim. Also, innovative & progressive farmers from different land-based Departments, Educational & Research Institutes, NGOs and SHGs of the region, KVKs, important input dealers and agri-entrepreneurs will showcase their activities in the fair.
