ITANAGAR, Aug 9: 'Reading Week' was celebrated in all the schools of the state from August 5-9 by the Department of Education.
It was celebrated in Hindi and English to encourage reading habit amongst the students and schools all throughout the state participated in the programme enthusiastically which saw class-wise reading competition in both languages. The aim was to instill the habit of reading among children, improve their pronunciation of words and improving their comprehending power of storybooks, news items, advertisements etc independently.
SCERT in collaboration with NCERT conducted NAS-2017 for Class-Ill, V & VIII covering 2600 Elementary Schools in the state on November 13, 2017. And as per NAS State Report card, only 52% students of Class-Ill can read small texts with comprehension and 48% students can read printed scripts(poems, posters, charts etc.), 42% students of Class V can read and comprehend independently storybooks, news items/headlines, advertisements etc., 43% students can read text with comprehension, locate details and sequence of events and 44% students of Class-VIII can read textual/non-textual materials with comprehension and identify the details, characters, main idea and sequence of ideas and events while reading.
Celebration of ‘Reading Week’ was thus an effort to improve on the above deficiencies and attract students towards book reading & improving the overall educational standards. Newsdesk
