ITANAGAR, Aug 23: Manouria Impressa also known as Impressed Tortoise has been rescued from Kakoi area in Banderdewa sub forest division in Papum Pare district. The rare tortoise was handed over to the Itanagar Biological park today.
Waru Nakong a native of Kakoi village informed that his father sighted the tortoise and informed him who later handed over the rare species to the forest official.
Right, now there are three Manouria Impressa tortoises in the Itanagar zoo-- two males and a female. The one rescued from Kakoi area is a young male tortoise, informed,Bunty Tao, range forest officer of Raga under Hapoli Forest Division.
The first discovery of this rare species was made in June this year in Yazali under Lower Subansiri district. Earlier the International Union for Conservation of Nature ( IUCN) has also written a letter of appreciation to the state forest department for rescuing the rare species, informed Tao.
