ITANAGAR, Nov 19: The World Toilet Day was celebrated in a benefitting manner at Chimpu and at IMC, Naharlagun. 
Deputy Commissioner Capital Complex Prince Dhawan flagged off  the rally  from Government Secondary School, to Government Middle School in Chimpu. The DC also took part in the rally along with officials and staff from the Department of PHE, students and public.
Exhorting students to imbibe good habits, he further said that since the Capital Complex has been declared Open Defecation Free, both at urban and rural level, it is our moral responsibility to maintain this status. He sought cooperation of every individual to keep the Capital clean. The DC also informed that the district administration along with the Department of PHE had also carried out repair and maintenance of water supply and toilets in every school of the Capital Complex. 
He  also administered Swachhta pledge to the students to maintain hygiene and to stop open defecation.
SE, PHED, Er. Tayum Tok informed in detail about the importance of the day and explained about the health and environmental hazards that could result due to open defecation. He also urged people to avoid use of plastics  and promote zero waste instead of leaving footprints of waste.
Er. Tadar Mangku, EE, PHED stressed that as Itanagar has been declared Open Defecation Free which signifies that every household has a toilet, it is necessary that toilets should be maintained properly. He also briefed in detail about the importance of using toilets. Explaining about the technology of Twin Pit Latrines which has won a gold medal at the national level and replicated globally, the EE stressed that the model is an environment friendly one which requires minimum maintenance.
The DC also distributed dustbins under SLWM (Solid Liquid Waste Management), to separate solid and liquid wastes and briefed about the mechanism to use it. 
The DC, SE(PHED) and the EE(PHED) also distributed certificates to the winners of essay and drawing competitions along with the Best Swacchagiri award to Tadar Cheke, best consultant award toTadar Tang and best performing JE in SBG(G) award to Er Ngurang Karuh.
The Itanagar Municipal Council also organized a rally with participation of hundreds of school students and public. 
Dr Devansh Yadav, ADC, IMC in his address urged the student community and teachers to develop sense of cleanliness. 
The EAC, IMC Hengo Basar stressed that living without access to basic sanitation negatively affects people’s health, safety, and education
Essay writing and wall painting competitions were also organized for the students.
