Participating in the initiative, the Governor while recalling the day’s inception way back in 1949 said a committee was set up by the Union Defence Ministry with the intention of suggesting ways and means for providing support to the personnel of the three armed forces- Army, Navy and Air force. Based on the committee’s suggestions, the day is observed annually for collecting funds for use in rehabilitation of battle casualties, welfare of service personnel and their families and ex-servicemen. He appealed to the state’s people to contribute towards the fund as a token of gratitude for the sacrifices of the men and women of the armed forces.
