PASIGHAT, Nov 28: A workshop to sensitize people on protection of water catchment areas was conducted today here at the CHF auditorium organized by PHED.
East Siang Deputy Commissioner Dr. Kinny Singh who is also the Chairman of District Drinking Water Catchment Area Protection Board (DDWCAPB) said that citizens should be motivated to imbibe the traits for conserving natural water sources, adding that increasing population density and demand might lead in quick water runoff, soil erosion and water shortages in coming days. Protected catchment areas provide a significant natural barrier to contamination and yield high quality water and all stakeholders should extend cooperation in water catchment protection draft preparation at district level enabling the authority to recommend the Board appropriately, DC opined.
EE (PHED) M. Dupak while briefing on sustainability of sources informed that a drinking water catchment is an area of land where rainfall is collected which goes into rivers/streams or seeps into the soil to become ground water to be consumed by the community. 40% of ground water is depleting 2/3 mtr per year and according to NITI Aayog Report in 2018 and 40% of India’s population will have no drinking water by 2030 and 1/3rd of population will face chronic water shortage by 2050. He cited the example of Lep Putu, Basar where the initiative of Igam Basar started in 2011 to conserve a catchment area of Soi village has helped rejuvenating the drinking water source of the village. AE (PHED) Er. Tadung Padun presented a detailed status report through PPT and delivered lecture on measures to be taken up by DDWCAPB.
ABK (East Siang) General Secretary, Talut Siram suggested for massive awareness generation at grassroots level for sustainable implementation of the upcoming law/act in the district. Among others, ADCs of Ruksin and Mebo K. Apang and H. Lailang respectively, DFO (T) T. Mize, EE (WRD) Er. T. Jamoh, SDO O. Perme also spoke on the occasion. DIPRO
