MAHADEVPUR, Jan 13: Normal life was hit as the first day of the 72 hour bandh called by various organizations of Lekang constituency demanding Permanent Resident Certificate (PRC) got underway on Sunday. Agitators blocked the National Highway and stopped tourist buses travelling towards Parshuram Kund and other transport services.
Earlier, anticipating untoward incident during the bandh call, the district administration declared the 72-hour bandh as illegal and deployed requisite security forces in the area. Police also detained at least six people who were later released.
However, after intervention of the district administration led by Deputy Commissioner Namsai, Dr. Tapasya Raghav and Superintendent of Police agitators deferred the bandh.
“After assurance by the district administration to convey the grievances of the people of Lekang, we have deferred the bandh. We have written a letter to the Chief Secretary seeking written assurance with proper details to provide PRC to the genuine people of Lekang,” informed the President of United Indigenous Peoples Forum of Lekang (UIPFL) Priyadhar Deori.
He however added that the agitation will not stop here. “We have submitted a memorandum to Chief Secretary with ultimatum till January 25 next, failing which we will resume our agitation,” Deori added.
The 72 hour Lekang constituency bandh was called by United Indigenous Peoples Forum of Lekang (UIPFL) , United Peoples Movement of Lekang (UPMOl) ,Deori Tribal Welfare Association (DTWA) and All Lekang Area Youth Association (ALAYA).
