Yupia, Apr 19: Department of Fisheries, Papum Pare district with support from the local progressive fish farmers is taking up the initiative to maintain supply of fresh local fish produced in the district to the denizens of Capital region during the current lockdown.
In continuation of their efforts, the department on Sunday sold 0.9 ton of fresh local fish at Naharlagun area with the help of progressive farmers Tana Sumpi from Sonajuli under Balijan Circle and Chera Kuli from Balijan village.
District Fishery Development Officer Kipa Taja informed that as of now farmers have sufficient stock of fish and they are looking forward to cover the capital area on Monday with more than 1 ton, to be followed at Doimukh and Nirjuli region. He further informed that the process of selling is done by strictly following social distancing and personal hygiene norms.
He further shared that the department is getting good response from the progressive farmers as they are getting opportunity to directly sell their produce resulting in good income besides helping the denizens to fulfil their protein needs. He added that the department is mulling over taking up the initiative of supplying fish on a weekly basis if the lockdown continues.
However, despite sufficient stock of fresh fish procured from local farmers, lack of proper cold storage facilities may cause hindrance, he said. DIPRO
