ITANAGAR, Sep 29: The Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW), Itanagar has taken Suo-Moto cognizance regarding the unfortunate death of a pregnant woman and her two unborn twins due to medical negligence in a hospital at Itanagar. The Commission has sought status report of the concerned case from the SP Capital to investigate the medical negligence of the concerned doctor.
Urging the Arunachal Pradesh Medical Council to take steps to ensure that such incidents do not occur in the near future, the APSCW has asked it to conduct enquiry into the incident as per the rules and guidelines of the Council.
The Commission observed that there were numerous cases regarding medical negligence towards maternity care during pregnancy and child birth in various hospitals of the state.
The APSCW has requested the Government to frame proper guidelines for the safety of pregnant women and their unborn children. The Commission had already recommended the government to establish Maternity Hospitals with high-tech facilities at the Capital Region and all the district headquarters in the State, it said in a press release on Tuesday.
Expressing resentment over the loss of three lives due to alleged medical negligence, the Adi Students Union vehemently condemned the incident and termed it as inhuman and unprofessional ethics of the doctor.
In its press communiqué, AdiSU informed that a team visited the residence of the deceased and interacted with family members. While taking serious cognizance of the deaths, AdiSU demanded immediate intervention of the Chief Minister Pema Khandu in this case and to order a thorough investigation and punish the officials if proven guilty as per appropriate sections of the law.
Further, AdiSU also questioned the state government over its preparedness to deal with such cases amidst the pandemic. Preparedness regarding Covid-19 should be a priority but other cases of medical emergency cannot be left out at its behest. Had there been proper arrangements by the government the three lives could have been saved. It took more than an hour to conduct the Covid test for the pregnant woman despite her serious condition and continuous bleeding, AdiSU said.
AdiSU also questioned Dr Posting Bayang that when he could treat his colleague's patient who was not his regular patient, how come he ignored the deceased who was under his guidance for months.
Itanagar: The Indian Medical Association, Arunachal State branch (IMA AP) while deeply mourning the death of a woman pregnant with twins due to want of proper medical attention, has however decried the social media trial against the medical fraternity and a senior doctor in particular without knowing the whole truth.
IMA AP stands strongly in support with Dr Posting Bayang; one of the senior most and reputed Obs & Gynae doctor of the state who has been alleged of medical negligence by the party. The said doctor in his press briefing has clearly narrated about the sequence of events that unfolded on that fateful day. With Gynae Dept of RKMH temporarily closed for 24 hrs, the said doctor coordinated with colleagues of Heema and TRIHMS for her admission as she required a multidisciplinary approach. The same was communicated properly to the patient party also, it said in a press release. The association also expressed deep anguish and utter dismay over the allegation levelled against him by the patient party as shown in social media.
"Doctors and other health workers are already fatigued and demoralised battling the covid-19 pandemic since its start against all odds; sacrificing their own private lives with families. Each hospital follows the laid down protocols in respect to covid-19 pandemic by the government and all have to adhere to it for the safety of healthcare workers and other patients. Many doctors and other health care workers have turned positive taking care of their patients in their respective hospitals."
Appealing to the public to be empathetic to the medical fraternity, the IMA AP said "Media trial in public forum or social media platform on the medical fraternity in general and a senior, hardworking doctor of such repute and status is uncalled for. Without knowing the truth labelling someone as negligent is really demoralising."
The Association also urged the media fraternity especially the electronic media to exhibit unbiased and responsible journalism.
