SUNPURA, Feb 21: In a tragic incident reported from Sunpura under Lohit district, an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) lost his life following a wild elephant attack on Saturday.
The deceased has been identified as Martin Lego, a resident of Jeko village, who was posted at Sunpura Police Station.
According to sources, the incident occurred while ASI Martin Lego and two others were travelling on a motorcycle in the Sunpura area. Suddenly, a wild elephant reportedly appeared on the road and charged towards them. In a desperate attempt to save themselves, the two accompanying persons managed to jump off the motorcycle and escape unhurt.
However, ASI Martin Lego was caught by the elephant and was fatally attacked on the spot.
Upon receiving information, local authorities and police personnel rushed to the scene. The body was later recovered and sent for postmortem examination as per legal formalities.
The incident has sent shockwaves across the district, highlighting the growing concerns over human-wildlife conflict in the region. Further details are awaited.
