CHANGLANG, Oct 20: In a major breakthrough, the Changlang Battalion of Assam Rifles has apprehended a top ULFA (I) cadre during an operation conducted in collaboration with Changlang police on Saturday last.
The apprehended person has been identified as self-styled Lance Corporal Rupanto Moran (30), a resident of Tinsukia, Assam. Based on intelligence inputs, the joint team launched a special operation in the suspected locations of Khimiyang, Yanman, Ngoitang and several adjoining areas of Changlang for last one week. Later, Moran was arrested from Jongphohate area on October 19, informed the Changlang SP, Mihin Gambo. He also informed that during a preliminary interrogation, Moran disclosed that he joined ULFA (I) in 2016 and underwent rigorous physical and weapon training at the notorious Taga camp in Myanmar under the guidance and instruction of the top ranks of the outfit that included its SS Commander-in-Chief. “The apprehended cadre is very proficient in Burmese, Assamese, Bengali, Tamil, Malayali, Hindi and English languages and before joining the outfit organization, he had served as a private security guard in Chennai for three years,” SP said.
He further informed that 1 MQ assault rifle with magazine, 49 rounds live ammunition, combat dress and other war-like materials had been recovered from his possession. “The apprehended insurgent was planning to carry out major subversive activities against the security forces and this arrest is a major blow to ULFA (I),” SP stated.
