ITANAGAR, Jul 12: In what may send jitters across consumers in the state, a retailer has been alleged of selling ‘plastic rice’ here at Ganga Market, Itanagar.

The matter came to light when a person filed an FIR against the retailer for allegedly selling Plastic Rice to him on July 2 last.  According to the FIR filed in Police station Itanagar by one B Langdo, it is mentioned that he bought  a bag of rice under the brand ‘ST Gold’ which later when cooked  turned into  a ‘plastic like substance’  and even  ‘bounced like a ball.’

When contacted, an official of the Itanagar Police station informed that investigation would be initiated, however such cases  comes under Consumer Court and the matter has been referred to the concerned authority of  the Consumer Affairs Department, he added.

Reports of such cases on plastic rice and plastic egg are already setting the internet and media abuzz since last few months. In June last, cases of plastic rice were widely reported from Hyderabad and in Gujarat where a family suffered from various health problems as a result of its consumption.
