PASIGHAT, Jan 6: Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF), Head of Forest (HoF) and Principal Secretary, GoAP Manmohan Singh Negi, visited D. Ering Wildlife Sanctuary (DEWS) on Sunday last and acknowledged its huge tourism potential.
While visiting the core zones of the sanctuary, Negi said that it has improved a lot since his Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) days during 1988-89.“I am glad to see the improvement achieved through the collective efforts of the present DFO Tasang Taga and the Range Officers and field staff. Management interventions are very active now and enhanced awareness about conservation & protection of wildlife among public has led to this improvement which has also increased its potential as an attractive wildlife tourism destination,” Negi added while summing up his visit.
During the visit he inspected the main wildlife habitats like vast grasslands, natural lake (locally called ‘Jopong Patang’) and a grassland in the middle of the high forest (locally called ‘Mikok’) etc besides reviewing the ongoing construction of the Range Office, Transit Camp and an Animal Viewing Tower.
While closely watching a motherless elephant cub separated from the herd whose condition has deteriorated, he suggested the DFO to arrange proper medical care by consulting veterinary doctors.
PCCF assured to arrange proper financial assistance to increase the depth of the natural lake so that water remains available even during dry days that would prevent animals from venturing into rivers which are hunting-prone zones. He also felt the need to raise/construct a flood protection barricade along the stretches of thick forest of Jopong in the north (Jopong podum/Jopong mata) where erosion is threatening the  core zones, keeping in view that a part of the Siang river has been diverted towards the sanctuary to protect the lower part of Mebo Sub-Division from erosion/flood.
DFO Territory & former DFO, DEWS Tashi Mize along with State Wildlife Board Member M. Tayeng, Range Officers O. Tayeng & D. Koyu accompanied Negi during the visit.
