ITANAGAR, Aug  29: The 5th Lower Balijan Panchayat Leaders on Monday demanded the state government to drop ‘Itanagar’ from Donyi Polo Airport,  and replace it with ‘Hollongi’ with immediate effect. Addressing reporters at the Press Club here, Hollongi Indigenous People’s Forum (HIPF) Chairman, Tana Puna Tara informed this as a representative of the residents of Hollongi.
He informed that the recent pronouncement of the under-construction greenfield airport at Hollongi as “Donyi Polo Airport, Itanagar” has hurt the sentiments of the locals.
Initially, the name Hollongi was attached while naming the airport but the state cabinet in a meeting decided to name the same as 'Donyi Polo Airport, Itanagar', he added.
“As the Greenfield airport is being constructed at Hollongi, the naming of the airport should reflect the same," said Puna adding that the locals have spiritual attachment to the place from the time of their forefather, and also politically identified since NEFA days.
He also informed that several memorandums were submitted to the state government in this matter, but no response from the state government has been received. We will go for democratic movement if the state government fails to address our demand at the earliest, he added.
Earlier this month, the state cabinet chaired by the Chief Minister had approved the naming of the under-construction greenfield airport at Hollongi as “Donyi Polo Airport, Itanagar”.
