ITANAGAR, Aug 28: Arunachal Pradesh is without any Panchayati Raj Institution as well as Municipal Body since May 2018 as the state government has failed to conduct elections ahead of the expiry deadline of the elected bodies which was May 14, 2018.
Speaking to media on the more than a year’s delay, Secretary State Election Commission, Nyali Ete informed that the Commission has already sent notification to the state government to hold elections and is waiting for its consent.  Responding to the delay of these elections, he said that the State Assembly had passed the Arunachal Pradesh Panchayati Raj Amendment Bill to change the structure of the grassroots governance from the current three-tier system to a two-tier one. Moreover, with this amendment carried out, SEC is only waiting for the consent of the state government to conduct the election, SEC Secretary added.
It can be recalled that in April 2018, then Chief Election Commissioner, Hage Kojeen said that State Election Commission had proposed May 14, 2018 as the date for holding Panchayat polls. But on April 13, it was informed by the state government that it would not be proper to conduct the polls since the Assembly had passed the Arunachal Pradesh Panchayati Raj Amendment Bill, 2018 in March to restructure the grassroots governance.
