NAHARLAGUN, Jun 12: World Day Against Child Labour was observed today by Women Helpline-181 and One Stop Centre, TRIHMS (OSC) run by Oju Welfare Association(OWA) in collaboration with Children Home here at OWA campus.
Lawyer-cum-social activist and current Capital Complex Child Welfare Committee Chairperson & Secretary-General Arunachal Pradesh Women’s Welfare Society, Kani Nada Maling elaborated on the challenges faced while working for rescued child labourers, orphans and helpless women. The government grants are small and OWA chairperson Ratan Anya alone knows how she has been running the philanthropic organization since taking over after the death of Founder-Chairperson Padmashree Binny Yanga, Maling said. She exhorted all inmates to obey their custodians who are working hard to give them a secured life and giving skill training to become self-reliant.
Pointing out that as per 2011 national census, 10.1 million child labourers aged 5-14 work in hazardous industries, hotels, homes etc. with increasing figures, OWA Chairperson Anya said that the event aims at highlighting their agonies.
It is worth mentioning that Maling has been instrumental in freeing 92 per cent of over 350 child labourers rescued since 2013 and rehabilitating them in OWA besides locating their parents to take them back. Few of the child labourers, explaining their treacherous life, termed Maling as God mother for rescueing them. Over the years, OWA has become a life giver for these orphans, sexually assaulted minor girls and other victims of social evils. Words of appreciation also came from senior journalist Pradeep Kumar who has a consistent and helping association with OWA.
WHL manager Binny Yachu and senior call responder Thuha Apralo highlighted the objectives behind their endeavours before the rescued child labourers. Swadhar Greh inmates also presented a colourful cultural programme to showcase what they have been taught in OWA.
CWC member-cum-OWA Legal Aid Cell advocate Oyam Binggep were among others who attended the function. OWA Press Release
