ITANAGAR, Jul 14: Despite the massive impact of 2nd Covid wave, Arunachal Pradesh has not felt any scarcity of blood during the period from March-June 2021, thanks to the large-hearted citizens who donated blood directly at hospitals in absence of the usual blood donation camps.
According to the collection/transfusion report of the above 4-month period shared through a press release by the State Blood Transfusion Council (SBTC), collections have exceeded requirements, pulling out hundreds of patients needing blood from the jaws of death.
During March, while 569 units of Whole Blood + Packed Red Blood Cells were collected through voluntary donations, 486 units were used during transfusions. In April, although collections dipped to 492 units, due to the already available unused stock that was carried forward, the state was able to meet up the requirement of 556 units. In May, 730 units were collected which were more than enough for the actual requirement of 689 units. Meanwhile, 880 units were collected in June against a requirement of 824 units.
In terms of Platelet Concentrate (PC), while collections (in units) were: March (104), April (182), May (223) and June (239), actual units used in transfusions during these four months were 75, 167, 145 and 335 respectively, with no strain on stocks in any of these months, particularly in June due to the carry forward methodology of the earlier months’ excess/unused stock. Unit-wise collections of Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP) during the above four months were 87, 102, 73 and 87 that easily catered to the transfusion needs of 14, 39, 22 and 35 units during these months respectively.
Reiterating the appeal to the citizens to continue with the noble gesture, the SBTC has announced that from now onwards it would release the data on blood and blood component collection/transfusion of every 4 months to let the common people understand the quantum and dynamics of blood transfusion services, blood/blood component collections and transfusions.
