ITANAGAR, Nov 19: The Nyishi Ethnic Students of Arunachal (NESA) has urged the state government to constitute a Joint High Power Committee (JHPC) and involve the organization as a prime member to end the discrepancies centering around the issue of alleged enjoyment  of  ST benefits by the offsprings of non-APST fathers and APST mothers.
It also called for framing a strong legislation to stop this unscrupulous practice permanently in the interest of indigenous people of the state.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, General Secretary, NESA Tadar Janu while taking strong exception  to  the matter, opined that there is an urgent need to draw a concrete mechanism to tackle the growing menace which is slowly destabilizing the socio-cultural fabric of the state. “There are numerous cases of offsprings of such couples illegally availing APST benefits which are meant exclusively for indigenous communities. We have also unearthed names of about 150 such people who are serving in various government departments across the state using bogus ST certificates,” Janu alleged. “Marriage regulation should also be made compulsory for all those APST women marrying non-locals. This dangerous trend should be stopped at all cost,” pointed out the Spokesperson, NESA, Byabang Noah Dui,  adding that the offspring of such marriages must take his/her caste on basis of father’s origin. He also clarified that their intention is to preserve the identity of the communities which is now under threat and they are not against marriages between tribals and non-tribals.

The organisation also informed that it had already submitted a memorandum to the Governor seeking his intervention. “After marrying local women, Non-APST husbands procure land and other movable & immovable assets in their wife's name. It has been observed when their sons & daughters again marry a local the entire properties are then transferred to their APST daughter-in-law/son-in-law. This vicious circle has been going on in numerous parts of the state,” the memorandum read.
