Aalo, Oct 30: For those who have fallen victim to the addiction of drugs and have been trying desperately to get out of the quagmire for long, nothing can be more inspiring than the story of Kennedy Bagra.
Hailing from Bagra village in West Siang district, Kennedy, a drug addict himself for 18 long years and a conqueror thereafter has been rendering selfless services in creating awareness on drug abuse for the last 10 years with utmost dedication and sincerity. He has associated himself with Mothers’ Vision, an NGO engaged in the mission of freeing society from the menace of drugs since 2014 and with his support, various awareness and counselling campaigns on drugs and its ill-effect have been conducted at various schools, colonies, sectors and villages of the district.
Over the years, Kennedy has earned the reputation as one of the best-known Resource Persons who can spellbind not only the drug addicts but also the listeners attending his awareness and counselling programmes. Through these programmes the addicts are motivated and mentored so that they can rejoin society as changed people and start life all over again. With Kennedy’s help, countless drug addicts have recovered and are now working with him in his endeavour of making an addiction-free society. His 18-year experience as an addict has helped in a deeper understanding of the drug addicts and devising of appropriate convincing strategies for quitting drugs and returning back to the mainstream. Kennedy also voluntarily mentors the '100 Days' De-addiction cum Rehabilitation Centre founded by the NGO which is running successfully and rendering valuable services to the drug addicts of the district and other parts of the state. His team has helped 20% of the total addicts to recover and they in turn are helping him to fight the menace. His untiring efforts have also led to the formation of a Recovery Club to encourage and motivate the recovering addicts and extend support for joining the mainstream. 11 addicts are currently attending the NA/AA meeting at the Centre.

Although Kennedy’s educational qualification is limited to Class IX, his ability to write and speak good English has put him in an advantageous position to take up training anywhere at the national level. At present he is managing the Drug De-addiction and Rehabilitation Centre established by the Mothers’ Vision at Gumi Nagar here in the township. DIPRO
