PASIGHAT, Oct 14: A team of officials led by the Divisional Forest Officer of D. Ering Wildlife Sanctuary, Tasang Taga visited the Sibiamukh Range of the sanctuary last Friday.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (HQ), Tatdo Borang, Deputy Director of School Education, Jongge Yirang, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Tatak, Adi Baane Kebang Secretary General, Okom Yosung, Dr. Dilip Dutta and others were a part of the team. ADC and others felt the need for urgent protection of the sanctuary by public participation so that open animal sighting could be possible. The team opined that a concerted effort is necessary for preserving the rich flora & fauna of the sanctuary besides maintaining the aquatic animals like fishes, dolphins etc which would attract more tourists and directly or indirectly contribute to the area becoming an eco-tourism hotspot. Later, a formal meeting was also held at Seram village Community Hall under Mebo Sub-Division which was chaired by the ADC. DFO briefed the villagers and GBs about the importance of Wildlife Week and how wildlife and eco-tourism of the area can be enhanced thereby creating self-employment for many living in the fringe villages. All the members of the visiting team unanimously spoke of the need to protect the ‘assets’ of the sanctuary. Borang and Yirang emphasized on arrangement of alternative means of animal rearing for meat purposes by creating/opening piggery, gottery, duckery firms etc besides fish ponds so that dependency on the sanctuary for meat through hunting could be reduced. However, all of them strongly urged the department heads and field staff not to show any leniency while dealing poachers.
As a part of the initiative to bring more greenery to the sanctuary, ADC showed his willingness to visit the sanctuary again to plant more trees including banyan (Sirot/Rotne in Adi) to attract the bird species like Hornbills again.
