ITANAGAR, Oct 9: In a major success against rising theft cases, the Itanagar Police arrested a notorious habitual mobile phone thief and recovered 20 stolen handsets of different brands — including Vivo, Samsung, iPhone, Realme, and Poco — collectively valued at around ₹10 lakh.
According to police , on October 8, a written FIR was lodged by a complainant reporting that during the night of October 4–5, an unknown miscreant had broken into his workplace at Solung Ground, ‘0’ Point Tinali, Itanagar, and stolen his mobile handset. Acting promptly, Itanagar PS Case No. 152/2025 under Section 305(a) BNS was registered, and ASI Tatum Tari was assigned to investigate the case.
A special police team was immediately constituted under the leadership of OC Itanagar, Insp. K. Yangpo, assisted by SI R.K. Jha, ASI Tatum Tari (IO), ASI M. Kamgo, and Hct. J. Zirdo, and closely monitored by SDPO Itanagar, Kengo Dirchi.
The accused, identified as Arun Baruah (19), a temporary resident of Ganga Market, Itanagar, was arrested following meticulous investigation and technical surveillance.
During interrogation, Baruah confessed to having stolen over 100 mobile phones from different parts of the Itanagar Capital Region over the past year. He admitted to selling the stolen handsets at throwaway prices to local labourers, auto-rickshaw, and trekker drivers in and around the Ganga Market area.
Police also revealed that the accused’s brother, Anup Baruah, had been arrested earlier in June 2025 in connection with Itanagar PS Case No. 31/2025 related to copper wire and battery theft, and is currently in judicial custody.
The entire operation was carried out under the close supervision of SP Itanagar, Jummar Basar, whose persistent oversight led to the successful arrest and recovery.
The efforts are ongoing to identify the receivers of stolen property and trace the remaining stolen handsets that the accused confessed to having sold, police stated in a press release.
