NIRJULI, Jan 23: Students of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Yupia on Thursday staged a protest due to delay in shifting of the current temporary campus from Yupia to the permanent campus at Jote here at the temporary hostel campus.
Speaking to reporters, a student from the institute on condition of anonymity said that even after ten years, construction work of the NIT Campus in Jote has not been completed and currently on halt since many months and the entire student community of the institute wants an immediate commencement of work. He also said that due to bad road condition and long-distance, students have to undergo severe pain while travelling all the way to the permanent campus for practical classes and it’s the reason for their boycotting of practical classes.
“The administrative head of NIT and the concerned Education Minister should respond to the students’ concern and place the matter to the MHRD for early arrangement of fund and completion,” he added while requesting the State Education Minister. The student further informed that although the Director of the institute has verbally assured to work on the matter at the earliest within ten months, a written assurance from him is the demand of the students.
It is pertinent to mention that since the establishment of the NIT in the state in 2010, it has been functioning from its temporary campus in Yupia, while the hostels are mostly located in Nirjuli. At the same time students have to suffer a lot as the theory classes are being taken in Yupia and practical classes in Jote, which is located 40 km away from Yupia.
“We have to travel all day to attend classes, which are located at different places covering a distance of 40 km. It not only consumes our precious time, but is also affecting our education badly, informed a student sitting on the dharna. The students have been protesting since January 21 demanding a permanent infrastructure which is still under construction since last several years and is under halt since 2016."
Meanwhile, assuring the students to complete the remaining construction work within next 10 months, the Director and affiliate Professor in Mechanical Engineering at NIT Professor Pinakeswar Mahanta said the protest for shifting from the temporary to campus permanent is genuine as the administration also wants that to happen. Speaking on the poor quality of the institute’s infrastructure, Mahanta said a team has arrived and is reviewing the entire technicalities and the quality aspects, adding that total requirement of fund for the construction is more than 300 crore and the Union ministry has also assured to allocate the entire f und.
Meanwhile, students have called-off their ongoing protest after assurance from the NIT Director.
