ITANAGAR, Jan 20: At least nine tigers were spotted in camera trapping exercise last year at Pakke Tiger Reserve (PTR).
Speaking to media, Range Forest Officer, Seijosa Wildlife Range, PV Rana, said ‘PTR is spread over 862 SqKm with three different wildlife ranges--Seijosa WR, Tippi WR and Riloh WR. It is very difficult to give exact number of tigers present in the reserve as we can only keep the record of those trapped in the camera. However we do a yearly census of the tigers and as per the last year record, our camera has trapped at least nine of it.'
When asked about the security of animals in the reserve area, officer disclosed that though hunting or poaching is banned in the area but the department has established Anti Poaching Camp at every 5Km along with required number of Special Tiger Protection Force (STPF), Beat Guard to ensure the safety of animals or to thwart any illegal activities in areas.
'We have also developed road networks inside the PTR so that we can patrol in the area. We also use elephants especially in summer to reach various locations for routine patrolling', added Rana.
Situated in Pakke Kessang district, the reserve is a shelter for over 2000 species of plants, 300 species of birds, 40 species of mammals, 30 species of amphibians and 36 species of reptiles. This Tiger Reserve has also won India Biodiversity Award 2016 in the category of 'Conservation of threatened species' for its Hornbill Nest Adoption Programme.
