ITANAGAR, Sep 2: Taking strong exception on the illegal loggings, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the state government to constitute a high-level committee headed by the Chief Secretary and submit the report within two months.
In a case against illegal loggings in reserved forest area of Papum Reserve Forest, and in part of Pakke Tiger Reserve in Arunachal Pradesh filed by an activist Jorjo Tana Tara, the NGT court on August 30 last has directed to 'constitute high-level committee and to ensure that the State shall take appropriate action to identify the hot spots, where illegal felling of trees and deforestation is taking place. It also directed to form Strategic Action Plan to combat the illegalities’.
NGT further added ‘Considering the size of the State and the huge tract of forest land that plays the role of carbon sink and considered as lung of the country, the State shall consider enhancing the strength of the forest personnel (at all levels including lower level) adequately which may include revisiting the existing forest divisions and ranges in order to ensure effective enforcement of the forest laws and protection of the rich forest resources in the State.
‘If necessary, the committee may also deliberate common issues arising from the question with its neighbouring States like State of Assam’ stated the order.
The order also directed the committee to hold its meeting within one month and submit its report through Chief Secretary within two months.
Speaking to this reporter, Activist, Jorjo Tana Tara said ‘If our people living in inter-state boundaries and foothills don’t take advantage of this order from NGT against the illegal loggings, the future will not be so good for coming generations. This is the right time, people should raise their voice against the illegal loggings and should provide the proof to NGT,’ he added while committing to continue his fight to save the environment.
Seijosa (Pakke-Kessang)-based environmental activist, Tara filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against illegal loggings on 9 April last.
