ITANAGAR, Jan 22: Minister for RWD, Science & Technology Honchun Ngandam has expressed concern over deforestation caused due to shifting cultivation in the state.
Ngandam aired his concern today while chairing a meeting of the officials of the S&T department which discussed the issue of scientific intervention in sustainable development in the state with special reference to Longding district. Deliberating on shifting cultivation that involves cutting and burning of jungles especially in Longding district and other districts of the state as well, the Minister stressed on the need to put an end to this method to avoid deforestation. He further requested the S&T Secretary, its Director and the Director of State Remote Sensing Application Centre (SRSAC) to visit Longding to have first-hand information on agricultural practices and interact with the farmers, Panchayat leaders and officials.

The Minister instructed the S&T Department to constitute a team of scientists/engineers to visit all the districts starting from February. The SRSAC was also urged by the Minister to conduct more research and recommend scientific measures for soil and water conservation to increase productivity in the state by using Remote Sensing & GIS and UAV technologies. The SRSAC officials submitted the shifting cultivation mapping and monitoring report covering entire Arunachal Pradesh during the meeting.
Secretary, S&T and RWD Ajay Chagti, Director, S&T C D Mungyak and senior scientists of the SRSAC and its Director were present in the meeting.
