ITANAGAR, Aug 31: Terming the resolution passed unanimously in the recently concluded fifth session of the State Assembly for inclusion of Arunachal Pradesh in the 6th Schedule of the Constitution as “mere eyewash,” the Nyishi Ethnic Students of Arunachal (NESA) has demanded its immediate withdrawal.
Serving a one-week ultimatum, NESA said it will resort to democratic movement if the demand is not met. Addressing reporters at the Press Club, its President Biri Chatum said “The resolution on 6th Schedule is a mere eyewash that may open the Pandora’s box for autonomous councils. During the last consultative meeting, most of the CBOs have pressed for amendments in Article 371(H) in line with Nagaland and other Northeastern states. But the state government has turned the table and focused more on the 6th Schedule,” Chatum remarked.
“NESA vehemently condemns such attempts of the state government to baffle the public through the resolution route in Assembly. We oppose the 6th Schedule demand and instead, the government should focus more on the amendment of Article 371(H) which contains some provisions that provide equal rights as much as in the ADC and for betterment of indigenous rights,” NESA President reasoned.
Responding to a query on their resentment over 6th Schedule, Chatum categorically termed it divisive and a tactic to support the demands for autonomous councils as the Schedule itself provides the rights for their creation. “If the government assures that inclusion of Arunachal Pradesh in the 6th Schedule will not result in creation of autonomous councils, only then we can consider it for approval, otherwise, we will resort to democratic movement until withdrawal,” NESA President asserted.
