Shillong, Feb 13: The North Eastern Council (NEC) on Thursday organised a Consultative Meet on Tourism here which was chaired by NEC member Professor Biman Kr. Dutta in the presence of other member Air Marshal Anjan Kumar Gogoi and Secretary, NEC K. Moses Chalai.
Attended by major tourism practitioners from Northeast, the meeting focussed on identifying areas needing attention for development of tourism in the region. Secretary, NEC highlighted how the Council and GoI have initiated a slew of measures to enhance image of the region as a great tourism destination and emphasised on taking constructive steps to increase the number of locals as well as international tourists. The meet also deliberated on the sector’s potential and problems requiring special efforts for redressal such as marketing platform etc to help tourism become a catalyst of economic growth and employment generation in the Northeast.
The need of an exclusive Northeast Tourism Policy was discussed during the session along with issues such as professional training of tourist guides to ensure convenience of local and international tourists. Representatives of the World Bank shared how tourism in India is doing and gave specific inputs for its improvement in Northeast India.
Secretary, NEC while requesting all stakeholders to work together in resolving the issues and take forward the commitment of developing the sector, emphasized that need of the hour is a collective effort to improve connectivity and add convenience for tourists with the   ultimate aim of creating the right ambience for growth of tourism.
