PASIGHAT, Oct 4: After 3 days of rigorous search operation, the body of 32-year-old man from Bihar’s Gaya district who had fallen into the deep gorge from the Pongging tourist viewpoint down towards the Siang-Yamne River confluence was finally recovered late this evening.
The dead body of Uma Shankar was located on Friday with injuries to the head and a broken hand. The dead body was found stuck on a tree branch at some 30-40 metre height from the actual river bank and 160-170 metres from the tourist Pongging viewpoint.
On Saturday, the team of SDRF and NDRF could finally pull up the dead body to the operation launching site. It is worth mentioning here that along with State Disaster Response Force which was doing the recovery operation with the assistance of Pasighat and Mebo police on Thursday and Friday, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team from 12th Battalion NDRF based in Itanagar, Papum Pare district also joined today's operation since early morning. The operation faced heavy disturbances by incessant rains and foggy environment which made the rescue team face immense difficulties due to slippery steep rocks etc.
Mebo PS Officer-in-Charge, Akai Chama briefed the media over the painstaking effort NDRF, SDRF and Police had made in the day-long operation today also. The OC narrated the hurdles they faced during the operation due to incessant rain and foggy environment. Chama cautioned the tourists to maintain utmost care while visiting the Pongging viewpoint as the place is full of risk, especially for the tourists from outside.
Meanwhile, Pankaj Lamba, Superintendent of Police, East Siang District who is closely monitoring the operation said that the SDRF and Police team made all out efforts to recover the dead body. First postmortem will be conducted and then the body will be handed over to the family members, added Lamba.
Late Uma Sankar, who was working as a Contractual Asst. Manager in India Post Payment Bank at Dhemaji Post Office, Assam, originally from Bihar’s Gaya district, had slipped into the deep gorge of Siang-Yamne River confluence while visiting one of region’s popular tourist place ‘Pongging Viewpoint’ under Katan Circle of Upper Siang District along with three of his friends on October 2.
Considering the repeated fatal accidents at Pongging Viewpoint, several people including public leader Mongol Yomso has appealed to the district administration of East Siang and Upper Siang districts including the state government to construct proper fencing around the edges of Pongging Viewpoint for tourists and public safety.
