ITANAGAR, May 20: A team from 12 NDRF on Wednesday afternoon in a successful Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) operation in Lohari Kachari village of Tinsukia managed to neutralise a chlorine gas leakage after 9-hr effort.
The said leakage occurred from one of the cylinders each weighing around 40 kg illegally dumped on the ground in the Krishna Dham area of the village which were covered by a concrete slab. On the day of incident at around 1245 hrs, DC (OPS), NDRF Pranab Daimari received a telephonic message from ADC, Tinsukia Deepu Deka that a chlorine gas leakage has occurred in the said area along with the SOS to send a NDRF team for launching rescue operation. Accordingly, a team of 12 personnel consisting of SO-2 and ORs-10 under command of Insp/GD Milan Biswas along with CBRN equipment and under supervision of Assistant Commandant Sanjay Prasad Sharma moved from C-Coy Dhemaji to the incident site. After reviewing the situation a rescue operation was launched at around 1550 hrs. As a measure to thwart any eventuality, around 300 mtr radius of the area surrounding the incident site was evacuated. However, due to incessant rain the operation was delayed and a further contingent of SO-1 and ORs-3 personnel joined the team at around 1805 hrs to assist. Finally with the help of JCB provided by the District Administration the concrete slab was removed at around 2020 hrs and a total of 18 cylinders were recovered, out of which one was found to be having leakage.
The team shielded the leakage and the cylinder was disposed by burial with lime, marking the completion of the operation at around 0050 hrs on May 20. Local police, SDRF, fire services and IOCL representatives were also present during the operation.
