PASIGHAT, Apr 2: A district level review meeting on ‘Child Rights’ organized by the Divisional Level ICDS Cell, WCD department, East Siang was held here at the DC’s conference hall on Thursday under chairmanship of Member, National Commission of Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) Rosy Taba.
Reviewing the district’s child protection scenario, the NCPCR member expressed concern over the low rate of prosecutions and convictions for offences committed against children. Referring to the cases of sexual offence, molestation, child labour etc. Taba underscored the role of police and its duty to register all complaints followed by proper investigation and appropriate actions. While seeking cooperation from the local administration and society as a whole to secure the welfare of the suffering children, she stressed on conducting more awareness campaigns at schools and panchayats especially in rural and far-off areas of the district involving the police, legal service providers etc. She asked DMO Dr Kaling Dai to provide medical services to the Special (Juvenile) Homes and directed DDSE J. Yirang to put all important telephone/mobile numbers relating to child safety in classrooms. “Students must get their benefits like mid-day meal, school uniforms, books etc. and we have to protect our future generation by teaching them to be smart, strong and safe,” Taba said while urging Deputy Commissioner Dr Kinny Singh to conduct periodical coordination and consultative meetings with all stakeholders in this regard. The DC briefed about the status of child safety measures taken up by the DA and called for maintaining close coordination among the involved departments, agencies and NGOs to safeguard the rights of children. SP Pramod Kumar Mishra presented the activities of the district police in this aspect and assured to extend all support from the department’s end.
Among others, DD (ICDS) M. Gao, CDPO Onyok Panyang, CWC member Joya Tasung Moyong, ASHAs, Anganwadi workers and representatives of NGOs attended the meeting. DIPRO
