ITANAGAR, Aug 29: National Sports Day 2020 was observed on Saturday in the state here from the capital in a virtual mode via webinar due to the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic which was attended by Sports Minister Mama Natung along with various knowledge partners, sports associations, sportspersons, cash incentives awardees, students of Sangay Lhaden Sports Academy and State Sports School Miao, coaches and sports officials.
The Sports Minister while addressing the webinar thanked the state’s athletes who have brought laurels at various national and international events despite the limitations of infrastructure. “We look forward to working with our knowledge partners SportsSeed, GoSports Foundation and GRIT in helping us nurture our best athletes and providing them exposure to high-performance training and competitions to compete against the best,” Natung said, informing that this year the state’s Department of Sports has provided cash incentives to 63 awardees from 12 disciplines. “The remaining awardees will be considered during the next financial year due to paucity of funds,” he added.
Secretary of Sports & Youth Affairs, Ameya Abhyankar appreciated the efforts of the department under the guidance of the Sports Minister and Director Tadar Appa for conducting the virtual conference and hoped with the help of knowledge partners, modern methods will be incorporated for betterment of sports in the state. “On the part of the department, we will support the project and create a non-lapsable fund of resources which will be available for carrying out both infrastructure development as well as soft programmes which are HR oriented," he informed.
