PASIGHAT, Mar 27: Minister, Forest & Environment Mama Natung has made a further appeal to all citizens possessing airguns to surrender their weapons to revive the state's lost population of birds and animals.
Natung made the appeal during the inaugural ceremony of the girls’ hostel and school auditorium at the Government Higher Secondary School, Borguli under Mebo Sub-Division on Thursday. Education Minister Taba Tedir, Mebo MLA Lombo Tayeng and Pasighat East MLA Kaling Moyong were also present on the occasion. He urged all to surrender their airguns in presence of Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Union MoS, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju on April 3 next in Pasighat. Rampant hunting practices using modern weapons like airguns and .22 have negatively impacted the wildlife and bird population of the state, the Minister said while suggesting re-opting for traditional and sustainable hunting practices such as bows, arrows and traditional traps. When asked whether the government will compensate for surrendering the airguns, Natung clarified that the names of all those  surrendering will be forwarded to the PCCF office along with their contact and address details and they will be compensated in appropriate manner.
When asked how the violators will be dealt with, Natung said that for them the forest and wildlife laws will be applicable.
