NAMSAI, Mar 16: A day-long orientation programme on ‘Rehabilitation of PWDs’ for the students and delegates as a precursor to the cochlear implantation camp scheduled here at the Arunachal University of Studies (AUS) was organised today by Ali Yavar Jung National Institute of Speech and Hearing Disabilities (AYJNISHD), Kolkata.
The said camp meant for the hearing impaired will be conducted at the varsity on Wednesday by AYJNISHD. Assistant Director, AYJNISHD, Kolkata B.N.Rao as a part of the orientation programme while sharing the status of hearing and speech disability in Northeast states informed that Arunachal Pradesh has one of the highest in terms of percentile in the region which is 36.14%. Throwing light on the educational rehabilitation rights of children with hearing impairment as per the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016, Social Welfare and Joint Nodal Officer-NE, AYJNISHD Dr Prosenjit Majumdar highlighted the plethora of problems faced by the differently abled persons in Arunachal Pradesh in terms of accessibility of medical services, affordability of assistive devices etc. He gave the figures that the total number of PWDs in the state is 26,734 which is 1.93% of the total population with males comprising 53% and females 47%. In terms of possession of disability certificate, while the national percentage is 32.28, in Arunachal it is 7.46. Lecturer, AYJNISHD, Kolkata Palash Dutta stressed on the need for early identification of speech and hearing impairment disabilities and the follow-up process involving aids and appliances. T.H.Robert Singh from the Department of Special Education, AUS spoke on the topics of Deafness and Society.
President, World Education Mission Dr. Ashwani Lochan highlighted the initiatives taken by the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment for the empowerment of PWDs in the country.
