ITANAGAR, Feb 29: A day-long National Consultation on “Coldwater Fisheries Development in Arunachal Pradesh” organized by the ICAE-DCFR Bhimtal Uttarakhand in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries GoAP was conducted today here at the Papum Hall of DK Convention Centre.
The objectives of the event was to initiate and discuss the aspects of promotion and expansion of coldwater fish farming in Arunachal Pradesh. Speaker of Arunachal Pradesh State Legislative Assembly Pasang D. Sona as Chief Guest stressed on the prospects of adopting trout farming as a true vocation for livelihood and nutrition security by the mountain dwellers especially of the temperate region of the state. He further advised to explore angling avenues in pristine areas and integrate it with aquaculture to develop the fish based eco-tourism model to further enhance rural tourism as a sustainable source of income in the state’s upland areas and assured his support in this regard in future.
The other dignitaries present were Commissioner (Fisheries), GoAP Belatee Pertin, RGU VC Dr. Saket Khuswaha, Former Vice Chancellor, ICAR-CIFE Dr. Dilip Kumar, Former Dean, College of Fisheries, Tripura Dr. J.R. Dhanze, Associate Director of Extension Education, AAU, Khanapara Dr. Atul Borgohain, Director, ICAR-DCFR, Bhimtal Dr. Debajit Sarma, Director of Fisheries, GoAP J. Taba, other academic personalities and officers of the Directorate of Fisheries. DFDOs from various districts, scientists from ICAR-DCFR, Bhimtal, trout-based entrepreneurs from Shi Yomi and Anjaw districts deliberated on various aspects of coldwater fishery development in state which included trout farming, mahseer based recreational fisheries, mid hill carp farming etc.
Commissioner (Fisheries) emphasized on the importance of capture fisheries among the local residents thriving along the river line and requested the Chairman QRT and the Director ICAR-DCFR to establish Regional Centre of DCFR Bhimtal in the state for which all support from the government will be provided. Dr. Saket Khuswaha mentioned the need to analyse location-specific enterprises in aquaculture to be developed in the remotest villages along the borderline so as to avoid migration of local residents to the state capital or district headquarters seeking employment. He further suggested to prepare a road map/blue print for developing and strengthening coldwater fisheries in the state since most of the aquaculture resources are available in high and mid altitude regions. Former Vice Chancellor, ICAR-CIFE stressed to develop indicative plan of action for development of coldwater fisheries and aquaculture in Arunachal by collaborative efforts from Department of Fisheries, research institutes such as ICAR-DCFR, KVKs and fish farmers. He further advised to work in synergy to usher in a real time Blue Revolution. Dr. Bagra and Dr. Kadu spoke on identification and documentation of coldwater fishes in hill streams based on their economic importance.
The trout entrepreneurs emphasized on the need to implement all the developmental schemes by the Department of Fisheries at upland areas and requested for all possible technical help from the research institutes. Directorate of Fisheries PR
