PASIGHAT, Jan 4: The fifth National Blindness Survey got underway in the East Siang district from today. This is the 27thdistrict in the country and is conducted by a 24 member team from RP Centre, AIIMS, New Delhi, headed by Prof. Praveen Vashist, Head, Community Ophthalmology assisted by Dr. Parul Jain and Dr. Tape Kaye, Ophthalmologist.
The survey is conducted through house to house visit by enumerating and examining population above 50 years of age in the community. The aim of the National Blindness Survey is to determine the prevalence and causes of blindness in the country and the state. Since Arunachal Pradesh is the second highest Blindness prevalent state in the country this survey is very significant in context of Arunachal Pradesh in determination of actual blindness burden. It is the major initiative of National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment for determining the blindness burden in the country.
Major Eye Care policies will be evolved from the report submitted to the Government of India. Dr. Taba Khanna, State Programme Officer, NPCB & VI is closely monitoring and supervising the survey work being undertaken.
