NAMSAI, Oct 25: A peaceful protest rally turned into violence after villagers tried to cross the barricade and police started lathi-charge, fired tear-gas and pelted stones to stop them from going further.
Hundreds of villagers, students participated in the rally called by Adi Students Union (AdiSU) demanding justice for the 14 family members. On, 12 October miscreants burnt down a community hall and 14 houses at New Mabira village under Namsai district.The villagers wanted to continue their peace rally till the office of the Deputy Commissioner –Namsai but were stopped by the police near Jengthu Bridge when violence began.
‘Police is evading arrest of culprits despite FIR being lodged on October 15 last, we are not against any community, we are only demanding justice for the family members who lost their houses and properties and arrest of culprits as well as to rebuild the community hall as per rituals, ’ said AdiSU President Nag Gao.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Namsai, Bijoy Talukdar met the AdiSU members and assured to extend all help but he categorically denied that as a DC he can’t provide relief to the villagers who lost their houses as the area comes under Reserve Forest.
Many villagers and police personnel including a Deputy Superintendent of Police sustained head injuries in the incident. As per report, violence started when the peaceful rally was stopped by the police and the agitating mob started pelting stones on the police. In retaliation police fired tear gas, started lathi-charge and also pelted stones leaving many civilians and police personnel injured.
Earlier, on October 24 last, Deputy Commissioner declared the peaceful rally of AdiSU as illegal with an apprehension that peace rally may create communal tension.
