NAHARLAGUN, Oct 10: Hundreds of people from all walks of life today voluntarily participated in a peaceful rally held here in protest against the unauthorized demonstration organized at Naharlagun on Wednesday last by the non- APST people in the wake of the unfortunate death of one Dinesh Sahani who was allegedly killed by a local youth following a vehicle mishap.
The agitators raised slogans demanding immediate arrest of the leaders who tried to provoke the incident by taking out a procession without any prior intimation to the District Administration. “I'm here to protest against the offensive remarks made by a few people during Wednesday’s protest. We understand the pain of losing someone and our empathy is with the deceased family but it is also wrong to openly threaten to stop the supply of essential commodities and shutdown all business activities for an indefinite period,” one of the protesters said. “Holding an entire population responsible for the act of a single person is not justified and we will not tolerate these types of nuisances which could go against the peaceful relationship between the two communities,” another protester added. Later, majority of the shopkeepers opened their shops in the afternoon following the direction of the DA to run all kinds of business and services as usual.
Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police (SP) Capital Complex, Tumme Amo, who rushed to the spot, somehow contained the volatile situation. Amo who spoke his heart out for five minutes amidst intermittent burst of applause has made an emotional appeal to every conscious citizen irrespective of caste, creed and social status to maintain peace and harmony. Appealing all not to make it a communal issue, Amo while interacting with the protesters promised that justice will be delivered without fail and requested all not to stretch the issue further. Later the crowd also dispersed following assurance by Amo to arrest the leaders and agreed to continue extending wholehearted support to the DA to contain the situation.
Extra Assistant Commissioner (EAC), Naharlagun, APCS Ashok Tajo also notified an order to all the shops and business establishments of Naharlagun to open their shutters and resume normal businesses without fail from October 10. “Failing to abide by the order will invite sealing of shops and cancellation of trading licenses,” the order read.
AAPSU condemns protest rally, to revive ILP checking
All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) while condemning the recent protest rally by Non-APST people at Naharlagun, has appealed all to maintain peace and harmony, besides condoling the unfortunate demise of Sahani.
Addressing a press conference, President Hawa Bagang said that the way the rally was organized and slogans were used despite knowing that the accused had been already arrested, shows that it was illogical as well as intentional to provoke the sentiments of the indigenous people. AAPSU demands the administration to arrest and cancel the trading license of the person who led the rally. He/she should also be deported for the next four to five years from the state, added the President. He urged the landlords of every commercial building of the state to collect proper information with documents of their occupants and submit the same to the administration to avoid any anti-social activities in future.
Further, AAPSU President also informed that they are going to revive the Inner Line Pass (ILP) checking in every district so that outsiders who enter the state illegally can be detected and deported. “We are neither against anyone nor against their business but want our state to be a peaceful, stated Bagang. Meanwhile, he also expressed resentment over mushrooming of organizations headed by various Non-APST people.
ANSU echoes same sentiments
While expressing condolence on the demise of Dinesh Sahani, All Nyishi Students Union (ANSU) has also condemned the protest rally and forceful closure of shops by Non-APST people.
Appealing people to maintain peace and harmony, Vice President ANSU Tana Sushil Tara stated that loss of life of a person is very unfortunate, but the rally and provoking slogans despite the arrest of the accused is not at all welcomed. “Hate speeches during the rally are unacceptable as it gives communal colour and the consequences may bring more disasters and hence we appeal the administration to immediately arrest the person who is provoking the situation by circulating hate speeches in social media,” he said. We welcome and respect the Non-APST people as we are a secular state but they should also follow the rule of the land and must obtain an Inner Line Permit to enter into the state, asserted the Vice President.
Further, he also urged the administration to confer ILP to outsiders with proper verification to ascertain their prior involvement, if any, in mob lynching, criminal, rape, drug abuse or drug peddling cases etc. ANSU also urged the administration to arrest the persons who led the rally and forcefully closed the shops within three days.
Meanwhile, Assistant General Secretary ANSU Charu Okum appealed the concerned authority to confer more preference to the APST candidates in obtaining Ph.D at Rajiv Gandhi University, the state’s lone central university.
