ROING, Sep 2: The India Post Payments Bank, Roing was inaugurated by Rajya Sabha member Mukut Mithi on Saturday in a simple ceremony held at the Anchal Samity Hall, Roing. Speaking on the occasion, he said that the idea of the bank was first mooted in 2006 but could not be implemented and has now been revisited, evaluated and accepted as a bank, with its nationwide launch.

 

Mithi reminisced about his association with the post office in Roing and said that the postal department had played a pivotal role in the past and has now revived its role and relevance in the present day. He said that IPPB will benefit the people of the rural areas where people don't have easy access to banks.

 

Deputy Commissioner Mitali Namchoom addressing the gathering said that with the widespread use of internet and e-mail service people thought that Indian Post would become defunct, but the department has taken up banking facilities and diversified. The latest step the department has taken is to take banking to the doorstep of the people. These days all payments, stipends, and benefits are given through DBT in bank accounts, so this will be very helpful for the people in places where there are no banking facilities, she added.

 

The DC also enjoined the government and Postal department to ensure the creation of good infrastructure for providing internet facilities as such programmes are internet based and benefit can reach the targeted audience only if the area has a good internet connection.
